Euonymus or spindle tree, bishop's hat, square hat, Euonymus europaeus

shrub of the family Celastraceae


Latin name: Euonymus europaeus.
Etymology: its nickname, "cap", comes in the form of square cap of its fruit.
Habitat: the Spindle tree accepts limestones.
Hardiness: zone 4 (it supports cold until -35 °C or -31 °F).
Size: shrub of 7 m tall.
Shape: ovoid, ascending branches.
Bark : dark grey, deeply cracked.
Foliage: deciduous. Elliptical, opposite leaves, sharp; margin with fine dentils.
Flowers: in May-June, disposed in cymes by 3 - 5; petals yellow-green.
Fruits 4 lobes, red, opening to free their seeds of orange colour.
Use: decorative garden shrub, isolated or in hedge.
Danger: the fruit of the spindle tree causes vomiting.
